Fort Macomb (Pano)

Description

Fort Macomb was built at the same time as Fort Pike, 10 miles down from The Rigolets on a passage known as the Chef Menteur Pass. It served to protect the entry way to Lake Pontchartrain and is of the same construction as Fort Pike. Macomb however is in a state of complete disrepair and is falling back into it the waterways that were once its inner moat and the Chef Menteur Pass. The walls are overgrown with vegetation from the western side and completely indiscernible from the eastern approach along the Pass. The wall facing me in this photograph is nearly detached from the rest of the structure, with massive cracks running the length of it and the base having been eaten away by wake action of passing boats, as the moat was dredged out and turned into a dock before eventually too fading into history. This fortress may never again see public opening as it is so far gone into disrepair due to numerous natural and man made actions. It did however see some light when it was used in the HBO program True Detective being the site of the first seasons climactic showdown at Carcosa when Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey faced down the series main antagonist.

Perhaps this site can be salvaged one day before its too late, but there seems to be a lot of inaction to save it from its inevitable doom.

Enjoy what history can be saved in photographs.

How many times have we been here? Takin' photos, gettin' bit by mosquitoes?

Oh, right. Once.
